About CheckMyBox
The team behind CheckMyBox currently work for UK WebHosting Company 3DPixel.net. Operating a large amount of servers, the standard server monitoring tools are used. Primarily 3DPixel use NAGIOS (or did!).
NAGIOS, whilst a great piece of software, is a pain to configure and maintain. Anyone who has installed a tool such as this will quickly realise and subsequently rant (like this) about its flat file text configuration. The stuff of nightmares!
We Decided To Make A Change
There are several downsides to traditional monitoring tools.
- NAGIOS has no clustering ability. Thus if the NAGIOS server has an issue, the entire monitoring system is compromised
- The text file setup and long term maintenance wastes valuable server admin time
- Whilst the addon system is quite good, it's hard to do things like monitor custom ports
CheckMyBox
We wanted a system that would be relatively low cost, ultimately reliable and easy to configure. So we built CheckMyBox. The upsides:
- Globally redundant simple monitoring nodes
- Third party hosting providers supply the nodes giving a true global and independent monitoring system
- Nodes must collaborate and agree that a service is down thus eliminating any single point of failure
- Highly scaleable, we simply add more nodes
